The History of the Band

The Pipes and Drums of the Police Emerald Society of Westchester Band was founded in May 1973 under the direction of Lt. Martin J. Harding of the Yonkers Police Department. Our membership is comprised of local, state, and federal Officers from Police Departments and agencies located within the County of Westchester, New York.

The Band's first appearance was in 1974 at the Yonkers St. Patrick's Day Parade where it captured the "Trophy for Musical Excellence". From this auspicious start, it went on to march in the New York City St. Patrick's Day Parade where, in 1976 it was honored to win the "Irish World Trophy" and in 1980 the trophy for "Best Pipe Band".   The band has also been twice decorated with the "Westchester County Service Award", bestowed by County Executive Andrew O'Rourke, in recognition of The Bands' portrayal of Police Professionalism and its dedication to the community of Westchester.

The Band has always been proud to lead the Westchester County Police Emerald Society in area parades.  It was exceptionally gratifying when The Society was named as Best Emerald Society Marching Unit. in the NYC 2000 St. Patrick's Day Parade.

Over the years The Band has performed at Lincoln Center for Performing Arts, been featured in two major motion pictures and appeared in concert with the Clancy Brothers, The Wolftones, The Furey Brothers, The Artane School Boys Band of Dublin and the prize winning choir of The Garda Siochana (The Irish Police Force) during its' tour of the United States. As a result of the Bands relationship with members of the Irish Police Force we are honored to wear the Shield of the Garda Siochana.

The Band has attained a high level of popularity and is in constant demand for appearances throughout the Metropolitan Area. Our members are dedicated professional Police Officers who take great pride in playing the music of their heritage and give much of their time performing for civic groups, nursing homes and hospitals.

In 1993 The Band produced its first recording of popular Irish and American tunes. The proceeds from this album helped The Band achieve one of its dreams, to go to Ireland as a group. This was accomplished in 1994 when over 70 members, spouses and friends enjoyed five wonderful days back home.

One highlight enjoyed by many is the Band's Annual Piper's Ball held in the fall of each year. Here, band supporters can dine and dance and take delight in the musical pageantry as the Pipes and Drums perform.

Our organization is not-for-profit and all proceeds from performances and fund-raising events are used for uniforms and transportation of our members.
